So you’re moving closer to having your own start-up! You’ve laid your plans, made arrangements with the bank, organised any employees and equipment you might need. There is only one thing left to do: get the office ready for the grand opening!

Office organisation may seem the same as organising any other room, but in reality, there are a lot of fine details which need to be attended to. Regulations surrounding health and safety need to be taken into consideration, ease of movement for both people and equipment needs to be thought about, and the possibility of growth should be kept in mind as well.

Collaborate, collaborate, collaborate.

 

Possibly the most important thing to remember – if you are working with friends, include them in the office design process! Everyone will have different ideas and thoughts about how to organise the office, so make sure they all have a say. At best, you will have a treasure trove of ideas, some of which may not have occurred to you on your own. At worst, you won’t have any new ideas, but your friends and erstwhile colleagues will feel included. It’s a win-win situation!
Collaborating also means that everybody knows what is going on. When everyone is involved in the design process, no one will be surprised (unpleasantly or otherwise) by the final product. Having everyone in on the design process from the start can stave off a lot of unpleasant surprises.

 

Design to the needs of your business.

 

Remember we mentioned designing the space for ease of movement above? Business will run a lot more smoothly, both literally and figuratively, if you design your space to fit your business, rather than simply hoping that you can fit the business into the space available.
The type of space you need is something which is entirely dependent on the business which you are running, and on the type of people who are running it. If you are a creative tech company, and your coders like to walk around talking to themselves while they think, make sure that there is space available for that! If you are an artist, give yourself lots of space to create, in whatever way seems best to you!

Consider the office culture you have or want.

 

This ties in with the above tip, to some extent. When creating an office space, you should take the culture and atmosphere you want to create into account. If you want an environment where everyone simply turns up, does their job, and then leaves, tweak the office space you have to reflect that. If, on the other hand, you want a space which encourages socialisation and the exchange of ideas, then design the space to reflect that, with seating areas and snack areas which encourage people to relax and chat to each other.

Keep the customers in mind.

 

This may seem only to apply if you are a customer-facing business, but consider this if you are ever going to have fellow-businesses over for meetings: what kind of impression do you wish people to leave with? First impressions do count for a lot, and a light, airy, tidy space is going to leave a much more favourable impression than a dark, cramped, and dirty one is.

 

Design the space with growth in mind.

 

Most businesses grow slowly, so while you are unlikely to need to change the office space drastically during the first few years of business, you will still need to expand. When first designing your space, keep this in mind, and be sure to leave space for your business to grow. Make sure that there is enough room left for additional equipment or storage to be added as and when you need it.
